After the Stonewall riots , gay men and lesbians in New York City faced gender, race, class, and generational obstacles to becoming a cohesive community. Within six months, two gay activist organizations were formed in New York, concentrating on confrontational tactics, and three newspapers were established to promote rights for gay men and. The raid sparked a riot among bar patrons and neighborhood residents as police roughly hauled employees and patrons out of the bar, leading to six days of protests and violent clashes. As the riots progresse an international gay rights movement was born.

The Stonewall Riots are often credited as a birth of our modern LGBTQ movement. No one fighting the police that night or marching on the streets could have predicted the strides made since. The Gay Liberation Front was the main organisation that formed out of the uprising and these wider movements. This non-fiction book is designed around artifacts of major events pertaining to the Stonewall Riots. As they passed the Stonewall Inn, they discovered a plainclothes police raid underway. Led by prominent activists Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, who were trans women of colour, the riots sparked an entire civil rights movement, and the reason why we celebrate Pride Month in June. The six-day riot began inside the Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City and was the breaking point of years of tensions between police and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender street youth and pedestrians. This had all happened at the Stonewall Inn before—and at every gay bar across New York City—but this night was different. We walked out onto Christopher Street , Stonewall Inn patron and witness Michael Levine recalled in a Storycorp recording, and there are what look like 1police cars facing the entrance and crowds of people looking.


After the riot , members of Vanguard issued a press release that state in capital letters: “WE HAVE HEARD TOO MUCH ABOUT ‘WHITE POWER’ AND ‘BLACK POWER’ SO GET READY TO HEAR ABOUT ‘ STREET POWER’. Stonewall pushed this militancy into the foreground of gay politics. The city marked the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Riots with a week-long celebration that included a Gay Dance, workshops and speeches. But the next night, the crowd returne even larger than the night before. On the first night alone, people were arrested and four police officers were injured. In the years following the riots , Christopher Street would become home to several types of businesses. However, in the 90’s, half of the space reopened as Stonewall Inn and that block of Christopher street became know as Stonewall Place.
