Stonewall uprising

The raid sparked a riot among bar patrons and neighborhood residents as police roughly hauled employees and patrons out of the bar, leading to six days of protests and violent clashes. That night the street erupted into violent protests and street demonstrations that lasted for the next three days. On the other, it reminds us that there are still many minds to change and rights to win.

Things, they say, are still changing. And nobody knows change better than the people who sparked a revolution. It was created through a partnership between NYC’s LGBT Community Center and the National Parks Service.


Stonewall the movie is a reminder of how far we still have to go. Yet that doesn’t fully account for how widely it’s been embraced.

In the 60s, gay bars were routinely raided by police. Pride these days is synonymous with rainbow-saturated celebrations of the LGBTQ community. Our collective understanding of the riots comes largely from oral histories, which present conflicting and contradictory accounts as to what exactly took place. But the only raid where I was actually inside the bar was at the Stonewall.


This feature-length documentary (running time is minutes) explores the dramatic event that launched a worldwide gay rights movement. With June come rainbows. In those days, gay bars were regularly raided by the police.


On the 50th anniversary, Surface asked artists and designers connected to the scene at the time to talk about the lasting impact. James Michael Nichols. As was typical during that time. They paint an incredibly horrific picture of how gay men and lesbians were treated back then.


The movie features interviews with eyewitnesses to the incident, including NYPD deputy inspector Seymour Pine.

Diana Davies, copyright owned by New York Public Library,. But instead of dispersing, the angry crowd fought back and the resistance and uprising was a key turning point in the LGBTQ rights movement. Fifty years ago, a raid and series of riots outside the New York City bar helped launch a civil rights movement.


For one thing, being gay was not only illegal, but looked down upon by society. As it was said in the video, there was no coming out, or staying in. And if you di you were basically shunned from your friends and loved ones. All Gays wanted was to be treated like regular people.


The relative freedoms and social acceptance that millions of particularly urban American LGBT people experience today would have seemed as surreal to that earlier generation as the prospect of electing an African-American.
